How Can Sewage Sludge Use in Sustainable Tunisian Agriculture Be Increased?
نویسندگان
چکیده
In recent years, farmers in Beja, an agricultural governorate northwestern Tunisia, have expressed their willingness to use urban sewage sludge as fertilizer, especially with the unavailability of chemical fertilizers and soil type region that is poor organic matter. However, there imbalance between important farmers’ demand versus limited quantity produced by Beja wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). face this, this study aims identify problems related reuse propose solutions solve them. The quality five WWTPs was assessed based on physicochemical microbiological parameters. data were collected using Delphi method, 15 experts representing different positions issue treated. SWOT-AHP methodology used define strategies promoting sustainable management for development Beja. Results showed no compliance Tunisian standards NT 106.20 produced. A set twelve practical conclusions identified, constituting Strengths–Opportunities, Strengths–Threats, Weaknesses–Opportunities, Weaknesses–Threats deduced from SWOT-AHP.

متن کاملSewage Sludge Management in Egypt: Current Status and Perspectives towards a Sustainable Agricultural Use
The present disposal routes of sewage sludge represent a critical environmental issue in Egypt. Recently, there has been an increasing concern about sewage sludge management due to the environmental risks, which resulted from the fast expansion of wastewater treatment plants without equal attention in dealing with the produced sludge. This paper discusses the current situation of sewage sludge ...
متن کاملSustainable and Innovative Solutions for Sewage Sludge Management
Sludge produced by municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) amounts to only a few percent by volume of the processed wastewater, but its handling accounts for up to 50% of total operating costs. Moreover, the need to achieve a sustainable sludge management strategy has become of great concern. It follows that as conventional and more traditional options, such as land spreading for agricult...
متن کاملHow sustainable agriculture can address the environmental and human health harms of industrial agriculture.
The industrial agriculture system consumes fossil fuel, water, and topsoil at unsustainable rates. It contributes to numerous forms of environmental degradation, including air and water pollution, soil depletion, diminishing biodiversity, and fish die-offs. Meat production contributes disproportionately to these problems, in part because feeding grain to livestock to produce meat--instead of fe...
متن کاملClosing Yield Gaps: How Sustainable Can We Be?
Global food production needs to be increased by 60-110% between 2005 and 2050 to meet growing food and feed demand. Intensification and/or expansion of agriculture are the two main options available to meet the growing crop demands. Land conversion to expand cultivated land increases GHG emissions and impacts biodiversity and ecosystem services. Closing yield gaps to attain potential yields may...
